MANILA, Philippines — The northeast monsoon or amihan season may end by mid-March, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said yesterday.

PAGASA weather specialist John Manalo said the northeast monsoon continues to weaken as the easterlies prevail in most parts of the country.

He noted that the dry season also began in the third week of March last year.

In the weather forecast today, the northern portion of the country like Cagayan and Isabela is experiencing lower temperatures and light rains due to the northeast monsoon while Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Abra and Kalinga will experience the same but with lower chances of rainfall.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have humid weather conditions due to the easterlies.

Manalo said that easterlies may be felt till Saturday while the northeast monsoon will surge again next week and will be felt in more parts of Luzon like Baguio and Legazpi until Monday.

There is also a 60 percent probability of a transition to El Niño-Southern Oscillation neutral conditions till April as La Niña fades and El Niño chances rise, May Escol-Canlas of PAGASA Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section has said.

While March and April are warm and dry months, Escol-Canlas said that some areas might experience cool temperatures.

By May slightly-warmer-than-average to warmer-than-average temperatures in most parts of the country will occur.

The probability is expected to rise to a 70 percent chance during April to June, World Meteorological Organization has said.

With this, the WMO said that weather conditions may swing to a warming El Niño episode later this year.
