MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections denied on Monday, May 5, a circulating graphic on social media that falsely claims the midterm elections have been moved to May 10.
In a statement, the poll body reiterated that election day will proceed as scheduled on May 12, with precincts open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Graphics claiming the elections have been moved to May 10 is FAKE NEWS. These graphics did not come from the Comelec and were not posted on our official and verified social media channels,” the Comelec said in Filipino.
The fake graphic attached to the Comelec's advisory had claimed the elections would be rescheduled "due to intense heat" forecasted by the state weather bureau PAGASA.
In the same advisory, the poll body reminded the public that early voting hours (from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.) will be observed for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant voters.
The poll body warned that spreading false information is considered an election offense under its Omnibus Election Code.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said over the weekend that all automated counting machines for the midterm polls have been distributed nationwide.
Final checks of these machines prior to election day will be conducted in each precinct by electoral board members.
There are around 68 million voters registered for the May 12 elections.
