Romel Pason Canson and Crystylmae Taniongon Nuñez were in a vehicle when gunmen attacked them in Barangay Lanao, Kidapawan City, Cotabato province, on Jan. 4, 2025, killing them both instantly.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A former police officer, assigned to the K9 unit, and his female companion were killed in an ambush in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato on Sunday.
Police said Romel Canson and Crystylmae Nuñez were traveling by car when they were attacked at Purok 6 in Barangay Lanao.
Canson died on the spot while Nuñez died as she was being transported by emergency responders to a nearby hospital.
Lt. Col. Argie Celeste, Kidapawan City police chief, said investigators are still trying to identify the assailants and establish the motive.
