COTABATO CITY — Local officials have urged the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region to honor the off-duty policeman who neutralized a man holding a seven-year-old girl hostage in Barangay Sabala Manao Proper, Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, on Sunday morning, December 21.

Officials of the Marawi City Police Station and the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office told reporters on Monday, December 22, that Senior Master Sgt. Sohair Solaiman was jogging when he noticed a commotion caused by a hostage situation. A male construction worker had taken a young girl in Barangay Sabala Manao Proper and threatened her while demanding money.

Solaiman, who is assigned to the municipal police station in Molundo, Lanao del Sur, along with barangay officials and traditional Maranao leaders, tried to convince the hostage-taker to release the girl, but he refused and continued to threaten her.

From a distance, Solaiman, also a Maranao, drew his service pistol and neutralized the hostage-taker, ending the threat.

The young girl was immediately taken to Amai Pakpak Hospital in Marawi City for treatment.

Local officials and members of the Marawi City Peace and Order Council told reporters on Monday that the PRO-BAR should recognize Solaiman with a citation for saving the girl’s life during the hostage incident.

Police Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, director of PRO-BAR, said Solaiman bears no administrative or criminal liability for neutralizing the hostage-taker in the line of duty.
