COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Police operatives arrested six men reportedly involved in criminal activities and seized from them unlicensed firearms after a brief shootout in Barangay Bunawan in Davao City on Monday night, December 29, that left a policeman wounded.
Radio reports in Cotabato City on Tuesday stated that the policeman who was hurt in the incident, Patrolman Geordy Fiel, belongs to the 13th Special Action Company under the operational control of the Police Regional Office 11.
Fiel was in a team of combined personnel from different units of PRO 11 and the Davao City Police Office, led by its director, Col. Mannan Muarip, out to peacefully search for firearms, explosives and narcotics in the hideout of a certain Rey-Rey in Purok 3 in Salooban in Bunawan, but the operation turned haywire when he and his companions resisted and opened fire.
Rey-Rey and his companions, whom police officials also identified only by their first names, Diosdado, Reynante, Marknel, Philip and Jay-Ar, eventually yielded one after another when they sensed that their location had been surrounded by policemen led by Muarip, ready to neutralize them all if they refused to cooperate.
One of them even hurled a fragmentation grenade at Muarip and his subordinates, but it failed to explode and was immediately disposed of by police ordnance experts.
Radio stations in Cotabato City have also reported that local executives and police officials in Davao City are to cooperate in prosecuting the six men for assault on persons in authority and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Muarip and his men have confiscated from the suspects, now locked in a police detention facility, a bolt-action .22 caliber rifle fitted with a scope, a gauge 12 shotgun, an UZI 9 millimeter machine pistol and a .357 revolver.
