CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — The Regional Trial Court has upheld the conviction of two former police officers for robbing a retired teacher in August 2023 in Imus City, Cavite.
In a 16-page decision, the court sustained a ruling finding former SM/Sgt. Daisy Diones and Pat. Rene Mendoza guilty of robbery.
The two, however, are at large.
They are among eight police officers who were dismissed from the service after teacher Rebecca Caoile and her son Juan John Caoile complained of robbery, planting of evidence, perjury, violation of domicile and unlawful arrest in August 2023.
Diones and Mendoza were sentenced to eight to 14 years in prison.
They were also ordered to pay the Caoiles P366,555 in actual damages.
Last Monday, former S/Sgts. Jesus Alday and Julius Barbon as well as Cpls. Jenerald Cadiang and Lew Amando Antonio were arrested in Barangay Malagasang 2C in Imus.
Another defendant had reportedly died, while former patrolman Reymel Reyes was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty.
All eight were members of the Imus City Police drug enforcement unit when they were caught on closed-circuit television camera entering the house of the 67-year-old teacher in Barangay Alapan.
The eight did not present a search warrant during the incident.
Investigation revealed that they took motorcycle tires and rims, cash and a laptop from the house.
The Philippine National Police dismissed them from the service in 2023 for grave misconduct.
The elder Caoile expressed her gratitude to Owen de Luna, former National Police Commission-Calabarzon director, for his efforts and assistance to ensure that justice is served.
De Luna acted as a nominal complainant.
“This is just to let them realize that for every action, there are consequences. They should learn a lesson,” Caoile said in a text message to The STAR.
