MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) will intensify its crackdown on smuggled onions after it discovered the sale of the illegally imported vegetable in Paco Market yesterday.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the DA will partner with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to expand enforcement against smuggling of onions in the country.

The imported onions were deemed smuggled since the DA has not approved any importation of red onions this year due to ample domestic supply.

Tiu Laurel said the smuggled onions may also be available in other areas aside from Paco Market.

The DA and PNP will go after the supplier of the smuggled commodities.

The smuggled onions discovered at Paco Market will be tested to ensure that they are safe for human consumption.
