David Archuleta bares the fun and flirty — as in playful — side of him in his latest single, Crème Brulée. The “American Idol” runner-up-turned-international recording artist simply shows how attuned and confident he is to his sense of sexiness and self, as captured in the song lyrics, its music video and choreography.
Definitely, fans and music enthusiasts like this one love everything about it and find the musical project delectable.
Crème Brulée signals a new direction in music, narrative- and genre-wise, that singer-songwriter David might tread on, yes, from here on.
“I wanted it to be tasty. I love food, and I do love my desserts,” answered David to the question from The STAR about the idea behind the food metaphor or reference in a recent virtual press conference that was also attended by other media and print members.
“Having that metaphor, it’s like, OK, like they wanted, they liked the taste, and they want more. So, I thought Crème Brulée would be a fun way to say that. So, it’s kinda like hard opening. You have to crack it open to get to the good stuff, too. But once you get there, it’s delicious,” added he.
As for what personal experience or insight about someone’s brewing romance inspired the song, David had this to share: “I would say as I’ve gotten more comfortable in who I am and (have) been more just open to other people, especially coming out, like I feel like when I came out, I also started to go to the gym more.
“I started just feeling more confident and it gave me attention that I wasn’t used to having, which was kinda weird to me ‘coz I’m, OK, in my 30s and now getting the attention that honestly, I just never fathomed I’d be getting, and from people that I wasn’t expecting. Yeah, it’s kinda that, it’s kinda like, you know what, I may be surprised by it, but I’m kinda just gonna own it. I’m not gonna question it. I’m just gonna enjoy it.”
Reading some thoughts on the Crème Brulée narrative, one could say that it’s about a new romance and the desire to have that special someone, but there’s this nagging and implied question on its longevity.
Again, Crème Brulée is about David feeling comfortable with his new persona and appreciating the attention and acknowledgment people are showing.
Given the ditty’s sound and his singing, Crème Brulée is a welcome change from the usual power ballads and pop tunes that David has either recorded or performed before. And he shared what the experience is like in embarking on such uncharted territory.
“I feel like the more playful, laid-back, sensual element to the music now, it’s kinda like ah. It feels nice,” said he. “I feel like I’ve worked hard to try to improve myself as a singer and performing all the time, but now, I’m like, you know what, I can just sit back and enjoy. I can give my vocal voice a break as well.
“I still have a lot of songs that I really sing out, but this next chapter, I just wanted to feel like, it was easy and more effortless because that way it feels smooth(er).”
For David, it also makes him feel sexier and attuned to himself. “So, that’s the intent with the next batch of music,” continued he.
The group interview did also allow David to further describe the tune and this emerging artistic facet of him.
“I would say it’s classic… classic quality, and sweet, but it also has a little bit of savoriness to it. The more you get into it, the tastier it gets,” shared he, also looking back on the qualities of him that remain the same with the career achievements he has had.
“I feel like I still have some shyness to me,” revealed David. “It’s just more like before I’d be too shy to do anything.”
“Now, I’m like, I’m shy, but I’m gonna do it anyway. And I’m like, omigod. I couldn’t believe I did it, but I’m glad I did. It’s fun to be flirty…,” concluded the singer.
But that characteristic is based on finding his true voice and sharing it in music, as one may put it. David promises to churn out fun and chill songs for the listener’s delight and enjoyment.
