COTABATO CITY, Philippines —Soldiers shot dead the leader of the terror group Dawlah Islamiya during a brief clash in Shariff Aguak town in Maguindanao del Sur on Sunday.

Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, Western Mindanao Command chief, said Ustadz Mohammad Usman Solaiman, who was wanted for 37 high-profile cases, was killed in a firefight with members of the Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade.

Solaiman, a bomb-making expert, was said to have masterminded more than 12 bombings of buses and commercial establishments since 2015 in Central Mindanao.

Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, 601st Infantry Brigade commander, said soldiers were sent to Barangay Satan following tips from residents about Solaiman’s presence in their community.
