MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) said that it will conduct a scientific investigation into a coastal uplift reported along the shores of Glan, Sarangani Province.
In a statement on Sunday, June 14, the DENR Region XII office announced it will form a specialized composite team, alongside the Mines and Geosciences Bureau XII and local government units, to conduct a formal scientific study to analyze the sudden rise in the seabed.
The decision follows a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that rocked Sarangani Province and General Santos City. Shortly after, the DENR said PENRO Sarangani field offices immediately initiated ground validation upon receiving reports of coastal uplift from local communities.
According to the DENR, its survey team reported that extensive portions of the shoreline, coral reefs and seagrass beds had been exposed, with the most severe damage observed inside the Pangyan Marine Sanctuary in Barangay Pangyan.
They noted that the exposed marine habitats have begun dying off alongside various resident organisms such as reef fish, eels, clams and shells, triggering fears among nearby residents that the stench from decaying marine life could be toxic.
The uplift has reached up to two meters, and the shoreline has extended by 200 meters, according to the DENR.
