MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education will conduct a series of orientation sessions to guide school leaders, teachers and other education stakeholders on the implementation of the three-term school calendar beginning school year (SY) 2026-2027.
“These orientations aim to provide clear guidance and ensure stability across schools as preparations for the next school year begin. DepEd is working to make the transition orderly and well-supported,” the DepEd said in an advisory.
The department noted that the shift to a three-term schoolyear forms part of its broader effort to improve the quality of basic education, strengthen instructional planning and ensure schools are better supported in delivering the K-12 curriculum.
DepEd added the briefings will cover policies and operational adjustments related to the shift, including assessment and grading, lesson planning, education in emergencies, flexible learning programs and the Strengthened Senior High School work immersion.
According to DepEd, the orientation sessions will begin this April, immediately after the issuance of the relevant policies, starting with regional and division officials and school heads.
“Orientation sessions for master teachers and classroom teachers will be conducted in May. This schedule ensures that teachers can fully observe their 30-day break this April and will not be required to report during their rest period,” the DepEd added.
Under the three-term school calendar, the first term will run from June to September, the second from September to December and the third from January to March.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara clarified that private schools are free to adopt their own calendar structures, following the statement of the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations that they are not required to implement the three-term system.
Meanwhile, Catholic education groups raised concerns, warning that the country’s education system may not yet be ready for the planned shift in SY 2026-2027.
The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Catholic Education stressed that the proposed change requires more than a simple adjustment in scheduling.
