MANILA, Philippines — Corruption charges will be filed against 45 current and former officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) over alleged irregularities in the procurement of firetrucks from 2018 to 2024, according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the move is in line with President Marcos’ directive to hold officials accountable.

Former BFP directors Leonardo Banago and Louie Puracan as well as suspended BFP chief Jesus Fernandez will face charges.

Remulla said members of the bids and awards committee and private suppliers, such as Palmer Asia Inc. and F. Cura Industries, will also be charged.

Grave misconduct, serious dishonesty, gross neglect of duty, graft and corruption charges will be filed against the officials.

“The findings of our investigation show that this is not simple negligence. This is corruption. Pre-signed technical specifications were used. There was no deliberation and standards and bidding rules were twisted to favor companies,” Remulla said.

The Bureau of Customs found that suppliers allegedly manipulated import declarations by undervaluing shipments, Remulla said.
