MANILA, Philippines — Two incomplete bridges on Siargao Island that were supposed to have been completed three years ago are suspected to be non-existent or ghost projects.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on Tuesday visited Siargao, a popular tourist destination in Surigao del Norte, to inspect ongoing infrastructure projects and address delays in the completion.
Dizon said that his visit was in line with a directive of President Marcos to assess the condition of infrastructure projects nationwide.
Bridges in Maasin and Asinan in the town of Pilar remained unfinished despite having been declared completed in 2022, Dizon pointed out.
Construction of both bridges began in 2021, but the bridges remain impassable to motorists.
Records from the DPWH’s transparency portal showed that the projects were awarded to a joint venture of Boometrix Development Corp. and Monolithic Construction & Concrete Products Inc.
The contracts for the Maasin and Asinan bridges cost P56.161 million and P56.165 million, respectively.
Dizon also expressed dismay after discovering that a flood control project in Barangay Tuburan in Del Carmen town, which was reported to be 95 percent complete, was only at 35 percent.
The project, which cost P72.91 million, was also awarded to Boometrix Development Corp.
Dizon stressed that delayed government projects must be completed immediately and an investigation would be conducted on the cause of the delays.
