A year after it was launched, the Weekend Market with Tuba Farmers is turning what used to be unsold and wasted harvests into steady income for Benguet farmers.

MANILA, Philippines — Quadruple A developer DMCI Homes has earned its first Asia Pacific Tambuli Award for the Weekend Market with Benguet Farmers, an initiative that supports Benguet farmers while helping reduce food waste.

The program received the Bronze award in the Leaders for Corporate Purpose under the Inclusive Growth category.

Launched in May 2025 in partnership with the Tuba Agri-Tourism Community (TATC), the Weekend Market with Benguet Farmers was created to help farmers from the host community of Moncello Crest in Tuba, Benguet who were dealing with losses caused by high transport costs and frequent produce oversupply.

“At the start, we just wanted to help farmers sell their harvests without losing money,” DMCI Homes Corporate Communications Manager Butch Mendizabal said. "We didn’t expect it to grow this much, but the idea simply made sense. When farmers earn better and communities get fresh food, everyone benefits.”

The program provides a direct selling platform that brings fresh produce from the highlands to DMCI Homes condominium communities, allowing farmers to sell directly to consumers and earn more from their harvests.

By shortening the supply chain, the initiative also helps reduce the amount of produce that would otherwise go to waste.

Residents of DMCI Homes condominium communities, in turn, gain access to fresh fruits and vegetables, helping build everyday connections between urban communities and local food producers.

As of March 2026, the initiative had mounted 45 market days across 17 DMCI Homes communities, generating P5.6 million in gross sales and distributing 37 tons of produce to around 11,000 residents.

For participating farmers from Tuba, Benguet, average monthly income rose to P24,061 from P8,805, while farm production increased from seven tons to 19.5 tons by early 2026.

TATC Vice Chairperson Jennelyn Saingan said the recognition brings hope to farmers who continue to face many challenges.

"We hope this leads to more support for farmers who are simply trying to make a living,” Saingan said.

The Weekend Market with Benguet Farmers is implemented under DMCI Homes’ Kaakbay corporate social responsibility framework, in partnership with TATC, the Tuba local government unit, and the Department of Trade and Industry.

Founded in 2005 by the School of Communication (now School of Media and Marketing) at the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P), the Asia Pacific Tambuli Awards is a prestigious regional awards program that honors brands, agencies, and marketing campaigns that successfully combine business growth with a positive, meaningful impact on society.

This year’s Asia Pacific Tambuli Awards was held at the Grand Hyatt Manila last June 5.
