MANILA, Philippines —  The Department of Energy (DOE) has appointed 25-year-old Mandy Romero as its newest assistant secretary, making her the youngest to hold the post in the department’s history and among the youngest assistant secretaries in the government.

Romero took her oath before Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, whose tenure has been marked by rapid restoration of critical energy infrastructure after recent typhoons and a strong national push for clean and inclusive energy.

Her selection of Romero reflects the secretary’s confidence in youth leadership and fresh, innovative perspectives in the country’s energy transition.

Before joining the DOE, Romero served as the Philippine youth representative to the United Nations (UN), where she spoke on the UN floor in New York during 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, calling for equitable policies addressing education access, zero poverty reforms, rural electrification, and food insecurity.

She also founded Capital1 Solar Energy, which develops industrial-scale solar power plants nationwide.

Romero graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University, placing Top 1 in her program, and is an advocate for women’s sports through the Capital1 Solar Spikers of the PVL.

“Serving our country is the greatest honor of my life. I’m inspired to work alongside the dedicated and passionate public servants of the DOE,” she said.
