MANILA, Philippines — If intelligence reports and travel records are accurate, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said gambling tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang, who is wanted for the kidnapping and disappearance of cockfight aficionados, is still in the Philippines.

Ang is facing charges of kidnapping with homicide as well as kidnapping and serious illegal detention before the courts in Sta. Cruz and San Pablo, Laguna and Lipa in Batangas.

Of the three, the Sta. Cruz Regional Trial Court Branch 26 and the Lipa RTC Branch 13 have issued warrants for the arrest of Ang.

“Our records show that he is still here. Based on intelligence, there are indications that he’s still around,” acting Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida told reporters.

Vida, however, did not discount the possibility that Ang may have left the country through unofficial channels.

“If we’re talking about the realm of possibility, everything is possible, right? If you have resources, you can do that. And if you have that desire to do it, you can do it with the resources you have,” he said.

Vida assured the public that law enforcement agencies are working to capture Ang, saying the government has tapped other countries and the diplomatic community to track down the businessman.

“We are exploring all avenues. We are continuously looking for him,” Vida said.
