MANILA, Philippines — Following a congressman’s claims of unsafe train conditions, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has assured the public that the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3)’s train sets are not compromised.
Kamanggagawa party-list Rep. Eli San Fernando earlier criticized MRT-3 general manager Mike Capati for allegedly allowing four-car trains to operate despite safety concerns.
“All MRT-3 train sets undergo a thorough technical evaluation. The DOTr and maintenance provider Sumitomo Corp. will never compromise the safety of commuters,” the department said.
“The MRT-3 signaling system is capable of supporting four train cars running from North Avenue to Taft Avenue. The system also passed an evaluation by international rail consultant Systra, which confirms that it can safely operate four train cars,” the DOTr added.
Chinese-made Dalian train sets are ready for deployment and drivers have been sufficiently trained, according to the DOTr.
In a Feb. 13 letter to San Fernando, the MRT-3 management said four-car trains underwent technical and safety evaluation.
San Fernando’s office has yet to respond to the letter after receiving it on Feb. 18.
“Now is not the time for politics. The oil crisis facing the entire world is no joke. We should help the people, especially commuters,” the DOTr said, referring to rising fuel prices amid the Middle East conflict.
