The cast and crew of "I'mPerfect"
MANILA, Philippines — An upcoming movie featuring leading characters with Down's Syndrome has been garnering significant attention.
"I'mPerfect," which has gained entry into the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), is being cited for promoting inclusivity in Philippine cinema.
The movie — produced by Nathan Studios Inc. — explores the lives of Jiro (Earl Jonathan Amanda) and Jessica (Anne Krystel Daphne Go) as they meet, fall in love, and pursue the universal themes of freedom and acceptance.
The film's director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo previously helmed "Kita Kita," "UnTrue," "Walang KaParis," "Pushcart Tales," and "Under Parallel Skies."
"I'mPerfect" also features a supporting cast that includes veteran stars Sylvia Sanchez, Janice De Belen, Lorna Tolentino, Tonton Gutierrez, Joey Marquez, and young actor Zaijian Jaranilla.
A powerful message from the film's recently released teaser states, "When the world says they can't… they'll show us they can," emphasizing capability and breaking boundaries.
The tagline has led to an outpouring of support and appreciation on social media.
One user stated, "I'm looking forward to watch this. Sometimes lang ako nanonood ng Filipino movies but this seems to be worth watching" while another added, "To a more inclusive society!"
While previous Filipino movies have featured actors with Down Syndrome, "I'mPerfect" advances representation by placing their story at the core of the film.
The film's eventual production follows a 15-year effort by Bernardo, who had been developing and pitching the concept to various producers since 2010, yet the original vision remains intact.
"I am thankful to Nathan Studios for making my vision come to life, after 15 years, finally, our story will be shared to the world with the aim of bringing inclusive voices to life," Bernardo said.
"I'mPerfect" will hit cinemas nationwide with all other MMFF entries beginning December 25, Christmas Day.
