ILOILO CITY — A man under police custody died while three police officers were injured after the patrol car they were riding in figured in a road accident early Tuesday morning, April 30, in Barangay Natividad, Barotac Viejo, in Iloilo.

Authorities identified the fatality as John Baldomero, a 44-year-old resident of Barangay Alinsulong, in Batad town.

Baldomero was the subject of a recent drug buy-bust operation conducted by the Batad Municipal Police Station and was being transported back to Batad following forensic procedures at the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory in Iloilo City.

The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. while the police patrol car was traveling along a flooded section of the road in Sitio Ambolong.

Due to heavy rains, floodwater obscured the road and impaired visibility, according to authorities.

The driver, MSgt. Renante Fuentes, reportedly lost control after failing to see the deep portion of the road.

The vehicle swerved and struck a concrete gutter and two telecommunication posts.

Although the patrol car was able to reverse slightly, one of the posts broke and fell on the rear portion of the vehicle — where Baldomero, who was handcuffed, was seated.

He was declared dead on arrival at the Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Barotac Viejo.
