MANILA, Philippines — E-commerce trustmark registration will remain voluntary until the end of next year to give online merchants more time to join the program at their own pace.

“It’s voluntary until Dec. 31, 2026,” Trade Secretary Cristina Roque told reporters.

She said a review would be conducted by the end of next year to determine if the e-commerce trustmark should remain voluntary.

The trustmark or digital badge is being issued by the DTI to online sellers that have good e-commerce practices and comply with Philippine laws.

Through the trustmark, the DTI’s aim is to promote confidence and safety in transacting online.

While registration for the trustmark was initially voluntary, the DTI announced in September it would become mandatory after the agency received numerous complaints concerning online transactions.

In particular, complaints received from January to August reached over 13,000.

The DTI drew criticism for the change in rules, with online sellers saying the trustmark was an additional burden particularly, for small businesses.

Following consultations with online sellers, the DTI announced in October that the trustmark would remain voluntary until the end of this year.

While the trustmark would continue to be voluntary until the end of next year, the DTI said joining now allows businesses to help build a safer digital marketplace.

The DTI said the trustmark is also expected to provide a boost to businesses.

It said early adopters gain key advantages, including enhanced consumer trust that drives more sales and loyalty.

In addition, trustmark holders can stand out in the market for their stronger operational credibility and reliability.

Roque said that 18,405 online businesses have so far applied for the e-commerce trustmark.

Registration for the trustmark is free for micro businesses with total assets up to P3 million.

For trustmark inquiries, online businesses can contact the DTI E-Commerce Bureau at (+632) 7791.3282 or email [email protected].
