MANILA, Philippines — Weeks after former president Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and surrender before the International Criminal Court, some of his allies have shown significant gains in the latest Pulse Asia pre-election survey.
Sixteen candidates are currently in the winning circle, with reelectionist Sen. Bong Go – a close Duterte ally – solidifying his lead with 61.9 percent voter support.
Trailing Go are ACT-CIS Rep. Erwin Tulfo (51.1 percent), Sen. Ronald dela Rosa (48.7 percent), former Senate president Vicente Sotto III (44.2 percent), Sen. Pia Cayetano (37.5 percent) and Sen. Bong Revilla (36.9 percent).
Also ranking within the top 12 are former senator Panfilo Lacson (36 percent), television host Willie Revillame (35.7 percent), media personality Ben Tulfo (35.4 percent), outgoing Makati Mayor Abby Binay (35.3 percent), Sen. Lito Lapid (33.3 percent) and former senator Manny Pacquiao (32 percent).
Within striking distance of the top 12 are actor Philip Salvador (30.9 percent), Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar (29 percent), former senator Bam Aquino (28.6 percent) and SAGIP Rep. Rodante Marcoleta (28.3 percent).
Among the 16 candidates, three are running under Duterte’s PDP-Laban party – Go, Dela Rosa and Salvador – while Marcoleta, though running as an independent, has received endorsements from Duterte and his allies.
Most candidates in the winning circle are affiliated with President Marcos’ Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, including Erwin Tulfo, Sotto, Cayetano, Revilla, Lacson, Binay, Lapid, Pacquiao and Villar.
Ben Tulfo and Revillame are independent candidates, while Aquino is running under the opposition party Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino.
Trailing behind in the latest Pulse Asia rankings are reelectionist Sen. Imee Marcos – the President’s sister – who formally left his slate last month following Duterte’s arrest, and former senator Francis Pangilinan of the Liberal Party.
Other pre-election surveys conducted by the OCTA Research Group and WR-Numero also showed increased support for Duterte allies following his arrest. However, only Go and Dela Rosa ranked within the winning margin in both polls.
The latest Pulse Asia survey, conducted from March 23 to 29, was based on face-to-face interviews with 2,400 respondents and had a plus/minus two percent margin of error.
