MANILA, Philippines — On their third day in The Hague last Friday, mother-and-daughter Honeylet Avancena and Veronica, or Kitty Duterte, were finally able to visit former president Rodrigo Duterte, who was celebrating his 80th birthday in prison.
The two arrived in The Hague on March 26, but were not immediately granted entry inside the detention facility.
Avancena also tried to bring her husband suitcases of clothings and other needs but these were not allowed entry to the ICC facility.
Veronica, on the other hand, reminded her father to eat properly and on time.
Vice President Sara Duterte previously said the two are expected to return to the Philippines immediately as Avancena has several businesses to attend to and Veronica still has classes.
Meanwhile, brothers Paolo, who is Davao City Congressman, and Sebastian, who is Davao City mayor, have yet to visit the former president in The Hague.
The Duterte family, as well as thousands of supporters, are calling for the older Duterte to be returned to the Philippines despite facing allegations of crimes against humanity.
