MANILA, Philippines —  East West Banking Corp. is seeking to raise around P9 billion through a stock rights offering to finance loan growth, expand its wealth management business and invest further in digital technologies.

In a regulatory filing, EastWest said its board of directors approved the proposed capital-raising on Aug. 27. The transaction will involve the issuance of new common shares to eligible existing shareholders.

EastWest has yet to determine the final offer size, entitlement ratio, offer price, record date and timetable. These details will be announced after the bank secures the required regulatory clearances.

A stock rights offering allows existing shareholders to purchase additional shares, usually based on their current holdings. This gives investors an opportunity to maintain their proportional ownership as the company issues new equity.

EastWest said the transaction would be backed by its major shareholders, Filinvest Development Corp. and FDC Ventures Inc.

“This proposed rights offering positions EastWest for its next phase of growth while giving our existing shareholders the opportunity to participate in the bank’s long-term value creation,” EastWest CEO Jerry Ngo said.

The proceeds will be used to scale up EastWest’s wealth and priority banking offerings, invest in transformative digital technologies and fund loan growth across key retail and business segments.
