Heavy equipment take up lanes on EDSA in Pasay City as the DPWH begins the re- blocking of damaged sections.
RYAN BALDEMOR
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) began the rehabilitation of EDSA on Christmas Eve, starting at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, as the department advised motorists “to use other roads to avoid getting caught in possible slow-moving traffic.” Portions of the innermost lanes of EDSA reserved for the EDSA Bus Carousel, particularly near Roxas Boulevard, have been excavated, according to radio and television reports. The concrete barriers used for the busway were moved to the next lane.
Dump trucks, backhoes, hydraulic hammers and roller compactors were also seen in the roadwork areas.
In an advisory shared by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the DPWH announced the 24-hour roadworks in some parts of EDSA in Pasay City and Makati, which started on Christmas Eve.
Road reblocking will be carried out along the inner lanes of EDSA southbound from P. Celle Street to Roxas Boulevard and from Tramo flyover to P. Celle Street. It will also be done along the inner lane of EDSA northbound from Roxas Boulevard to Tramo Avenue and from Park Avenue to Taft Avenue until Dec. 27.
On the same date, asphalt overlay will be done on EDSA southbound from Orense Street to Urdaneta Village in Makati City, from Orense to Magallanes Interchange in Makati City, and inner to outer lanes from Tramo to Loring Streets in Pasay.
The DPWH released another schedule of roadworks for the EDSA rehabilitation project from Dec. 28, 2025 to Jan. 5, 2026.
Concrete reblocking will be carried out at EDSA southbound from Roxas Boulevard to F. B. Harrison, from near Home Expo Builders Depot to P. Celle Street in Pasay City, and from Ayala Underpass exit to San Lorenzo Village in Makati; and at EDSA northbound from Roxas Boulevard to Sgt. Mariano in Pasay City, Park Avenue in Pasay to Orense in Makati, and from Orense to McKinley Road in Makati.
Meanwhile, portions of EDSA near Roxas Boulevard, Tramo and E. Rodriguez in Pasay, and at Kalayaan Avenue, Ayala Underpass and Urdaneta Village in Makati will undergo asphalt overlay.
The EDSA rehabilitation program will undergo its first phase covering the area from Orense Street in Makati to Roxas Boulevard, which is expected to last until April or May 2026.
After the 24-hour roadworks until Jan. 5, nighttime schedule will apply starting the next day until April or May 2026.
The overall EDSA rehabilitation project will last for eight months, according to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon.
