Rising star Eldrew Yulo qualified for the medal rounds of four apparatus events in the juniors division of the 18th Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jecheon, South Korea Friday, June 6.The 16-year-old Yulo managed to earn tickets in floor exercise, horizontal bar, pommel horse and vault, where he is the defending champion after his golden performance last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.He, however, finished ninth in individual all-around with a total of 75.698 points.Reigning supreme was Nao Ojima of Japan (79.465), followed by Korean Yejun Cha (78.964) and another Japanese in Tomoharu Tanida (78.365).Yulo ranked fourth in vault (13.250), sixth in floor (13.533) and horizontal bar (12.733), and ninth in pommel horse (12.633).With only the top 8 gymnasts advancing and a limit of two contenders per country earning a spot in the finals of each apparatus, Yulo took the last berth as three Kazakhstan bets ranked better than him in the qualification round.The medal rounds are set Sunday, June 8.Meanwhile, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo tries to replicate his fruitful run last year as he is set to compete in almost all apparatus – except in pommel horse – over the weekend.The elder Yulo is the defending champion in all-around, floor, vault, and parallel bars.
