MANILA, Philippines —The Supreme Court (SC) has affirmed the preventive suspension from the practice of law imposed on a retired associate justice of the Court of Appeals in connection with the murder of a lawyer in Cebu City.

The SC Office of the Spokesperson said the high tribunal rejected a motion filed by former appellate court associate justice Isaias Dicdican, seeking to lift his preventive suspension and restore his person and retirement benefits.

Dicdican was charged with gross misconduct over his alleged involvement in the murder of lawyer Joey Luis Wee.

The preventive sanction was not meant to punish, but to serve as a precautionary measure because Dicdican may influence the ongoing criminal and administrative proceedings against him.

The high tribunal said that Dicdican’s pension and retirement benefits should remain withheld until he personally submits his pensioner’s survey form and other documents required by the Office of the Court Administrator.

The SC said that Dicdican’s  whereabouts remained uncertain for the past two years.
