Ex-ICI investigator Azurin named tourism undersecretary

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Tourism has appointed former special adviser and investigator of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) Rodolfo Azurin Jr. as DOT undersecretary for visitor safety and security initiatives.

In a Facebook post, the DOT said Azurin took his oath before Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay recently.

“Drawing on his decades of experience in public service, law enforcement and public safety, Undersecretary Azurin will work closely with national government agencies, local government units, law enforcement authorities and tourism stakeholders to help ensure that the Philippines remains a safe, secure and welcoming destination for all visitors,” the DOT said.

Azurin helped ensure comprehensive security and public safety measures during the “Lollapalooza” watch party for SB19 in Manila’s Rizal Park and other locations in the country.

Azurin was part of the flood control investigating body ICI.

He served as ICI special adviser and investigator, replacing Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong who resigned from the commission, until its dissolution on March 31.

Azurin was the 28th chief of the Philippine National Police, stepping down in 2023 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
