VICTIM AND SUSPECT. Murder victim Yvonette Chua-Plaza and Army Brigadier General Jesus Durante III, identified by police as the alleged mastermind.
'Despite the toll it took, he remained firm in his faith in the justice system,' says General Jesus Durante III's lawyer
DAVAO, Philippines – A military court has acquitted former Presidential Security Group (PSG) chief Brigadier General Jesus Durante III in connection with the December 29, 2022 murder of businesswoman Yvonette Chua Plaza in Davao City.
The decision on Wednesday, May 28, marked the end of what Durante’s legal counsel described as a “harrowing chapter” in the officer’s life.
Durante’s lawyer, Ramon Edison Batacan, told the Davao-based Newsline Philippines that his client is “deeply relieved” by the court’s ruling, which officially affirmed his innocence and cleared him of any involvement in the killing.
“While the result is consistent with what the defense has always maintained, it is still difficult to accept the two years of unjust confinement and the burden of a prolonged legal battle,” Batacan said.
He said Durante’s legal ordeal resulted in personal and professional losses, including time away from his family, his military duties, and his broader role in society.
“Despite the toll it took, he remained firm in his faith in the justice system,” Batacan added. “He understands that no system is perfect, but believes that the principles of due process and fairness ultimately prevailed.”
Now free, Durante is expected to return to his duties with renewed commitment.
“This experience has only deepened his resolve to serve with integrity and to uphold the values of justice, transparency, and public trust,” Batacan said. “Rather than dwell on the past, he is focused on rebuilding his life, giving back to the community, and honoring the confidence others have placed in him.”
The military court’s ruling is seen as a significant development in a case that drew national attention, following the brutal murder of Chua-Plaza in late 2022.
In early 2023, Durante was accused of masterminding the gun attack on Chua-Plaza outside her Green Meadows home in Davao just days before New Year’s Day. Several of his subordinates were also charged.
At the time of the murder, Durante was commander of an Army brigade in Davao de Oro.
Before that, he served as PSG commander during the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte. – Rappler.com
