DAGUPAN CITY, Pangasinan — A transformative leap for Northern Luzon's public health care system has been set in motion with the signing of Republic Act (RA) 12203, which officially increases the bed capacity of the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) from 600 to 1,500.
This major development was the centerpiece of a high-level Command Conference and Celebration on May 16 at the R1MC Annex Building in Bonuan Binloc.
Hospital executives, health officials and community stakeholders gathered to align strategies and celebrate the passage of the law that is expected to reshape patient care across the region.
The Senate version of RA 12203 was spearheaded by Sen. Bong Go, a staunch advocate for public health, while the House version was authored by Pangasinan 4th District Rep. Christopher de Venecia, who has long championed local health care improvements.
Dr. Paula Paz Sydiongco, regional director of the Department of Health-Center for Health Development I, commended the initiative as a "visionary step" toward a more responsive and inclusive health care system. She was joined by Dr. Michael Canto, chairman of the Hospital's Management Committee, and Dr. Joseph Roland Mejia, Medical Center chief II of R1MC, who emphasized the hospital's renewed mission to serve more patients with greater efficiency and care.

"This is more than an expansion in numbers — it's a declaration of our commitment to the people of Northern Luzon," said Mejia.
With expanded capacity and enhanced facilities now on the horizon, R1MC is gearing up to become one of the leading public medical institutions in the region, ready to serve thousands more with compassion and excellence.
