Explainer: What’s driving the latest spike in electricity prices

Across the Philippines, especially in Metro Manila, electric bills have been spiking at a pace that is hard to ignore. Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) reported higher electricity rates for April, with residential customers consuming 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) a month seeing the overall rate rise to P14.35 per kWh — an increase of 53 centavos per
