MANILA, Philippines — As the conflict in the Middle East continues to drive up oil prices, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulation Board (LTFRB) approved a fare increase across the board, from jeepneys down to transportation network vehicle services (TNVS).

In a press conference on Tuesday, March 17, LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza explained that fuel prices have been erratic in the past few weeks, with substantial changes coming in fast.

The price of fuel is the primary driver of the fare hike, but the LTFRB has also taken into account a rise in the price of spare parts and maintenance, as well as increases in the average minimum wage.

Mendoza announced the following fare hikes:

Traditional and modern jeepneys get a fare increase of P2 for base rates, as well as higher per-kilometer fares.

For example, if you are riding a modern jeep, a trip from Divisoria in Manila to Cubao is currently P23.8. The new fare hikes will raise it to P26.

A fare hike is also in order for metro buses, with ordinary and air-conditioned buses getting a P2 and P3 increase for their base fares, respectively.

A trip from SM Fairview to Luzon Avenue, which currently costs P24.25, will now be P27.45, according to the LTFRB.

The rates for provincial buses have also increased over the weekend. While rates vary depending on operator and destination, the average per-kilometer rate is raised from P1.90 to P2.20 per kilometer.

A ride from Manila to Baguio currently costs P469. With the fare increase, it will now become P542.

Point-to-point (P2P) buses will see a 15% increase. For example, the P2P from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 to Clark airport will now cost P460, from P400.

TNVS will also see a significant jump, with their base fare rising by P20 across all vehicle types. However, the LTFRB said that there will be no per-kilometer increase. It is important to note, however, that the prices of TNVS can fluctuate based on the availability of vehicles.

Similarly, airport taxis were also allowed to raise base fares from P75 to P155.

These hikes will be effective on Thursday, March 19.

The LTFRB said that ordinary taxis and UV express have also just filed petitions for fare hikes, which they will process.
