COTABATO CITY — The local government employee attacked by gunmen in Isabela City, Basilan, on Thursday, May 14, died in a hospital where emergency responders had taken her for treatment.
The victim, Karen Isabel Toledo Resurreccion, died at a hospital in Isabela City in Basilan, where emergency responders had brought her for treatment. Basilan is one of the five provinces in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Officials from the Isabela City Police Station and local executives told reporters on Friday, May 15, that Resurreccion and her 50-year-old husband, Nelson, were riding a Yamaha Mio motorcycle home when gunmen attacked them on a secluded stretch of a road in Barangay Lanote.
The attack left Resurreccion's husband wounded. He is now hospitalized.
Police investigators and barangay officials said the assailants immediately escaped on a getaway motorcycle.
Co-workers relatives described Resurreccion as a dedicated and hardworking employee of the Lamitan City LGU with no known enemies.
Radio reports on Friday from Cotabato City, the Bangsamoro region's capital, said Basilan Gov. Mujiv Hataman and his wife, Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, condemned attack. They separately urged residents of Barangay Lanote to assist police in identifying the perpetrators for prosecution.
Hataman, who chairs the multi-sector Basilan Peace and Order Council, said he is willing to offer a monetary reward to any informant who can help the police identify the two attackers so they can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law.
