MANILA, Philippines — First Gen Corp. has forged a renewable energy deal to power Gokongwei-owned Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC)’s supermarkets and shopping malls in Visayas and Mindanao.
Under the agreement, the Lopez Group’s power arm will supply geothermal energy to the property developer’s retail centers across key provinces, including Cebu, Leyte, Capiz, Antique and Zamboanga del Sur.
First Gen will source more than 22 megawatts (MW) of clean power from its geothermal facilities in Leyte and North Cotabato.
“Consistent with the net zero goal of the Gokongwei Group by 2050, we at Robinsons Land are committed to keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible and ensuring sustainability through strong environmental performance and energy efficiency,” RLC president and CEO Mybelle Aragon-GoBio said.
The supply deal is also expected to help the property firm reduce its exposure to power price volatility caused by global fuel markets amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, she said.
Currently, RLC owns and operates 57 malls nationwide, along with a diversified real estate portfolio that includes office buildings, residential developments, hotels, destination estates as well as industrial and logistics facilities.
Notably, renewables supply around 10 to 15 percent of RLC’s total power requirements, including 30 MW of combined capacity from rooftop solar facilities.
“Geothermal energy is not just renewable; it’s also indigenous and the only clean energy source that can run baseload capacity. It offers not just electricity cost optimization but also price predictability,” First Gen president and COO Francis Giles Puno said.
“We look forward to supporting RLC as they continue to grow their portfolio with sustainability at the core of their expansion,” Puno said.
First Gen is one of the country’s leading power producers, operating about 1,700 MW of generating capacity from hydro, geothermal, solar and wind facilities. It also owns a minority stake in four gas-fired power plants totaling 2,017 MW in Batangas.
