MANILA, Philippines — Senate migrant workers committee chair Raffy Tulfo yesterday pushed for his bill giving free financial literacy education to OFWs, calling it timely amid the Middle East crisis.

Tulfo said his Senate Bill 1910 covers OFWs, land-based or sea-based, documented or not and their families or dependents.

“Its purpose is to educate our OFWs and their families on how to save money,” Tulfo said.

The bill does not seek to provide ayuda but instead educate OFW families how to save their money.

Tulfo said his measure will require all OFWs to undergo mandatory financial education or literacy training seminars as part of the “Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars.”

OFWs will also be required to attend “Post-Arrival Training Seminars” upon arriving in their country of work.

The bill hurdled second reading during the Wednesday plenary session.
