MANILA, Philippines — Commuters waiting for carousel buses may now access the internet for free after the government installed WiFi sites on the EDSA busway’s 17 stations.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology yesterday brought its Free Public Internet Access Program to the busway, benefiting nearly 67 million commuters.

With the help of the Department of Transportation, the DICT installed a 5G device on each of the 17 busway stations.

The program complements the DOTr’s efforts to push contactless transactions in public transport in Metro Manila.

Commuters may use the free WiFi access to complete basic tasks and consume light-data entertainment while waiting for carousel buses.

Information Secretary Henry Aguda said the service delivers a download speed of up to 60 Mbps during non-peak hours. This could go down to as low as 10 Mbps on peak hours, when the busway is swamped by passengers.

The free internet access covers the busway stations in Balintawak, Kaingin, Fernando Poe Jr., SM North Edsa, North Avenue, Philam, Quezon Avenue, Kamuning, Nepa Q-Mart, Main Avenue, Ortigas, Buendia, Ayala, Tramo, Taft Avenue, Roxas Boulevard and SM Mall of Asia.

The DICT will also install free WiFi services on the busway stations in Monumento, Bagong Barrio and Guadalupe once the EDSA rehabilitation has been completed. –  Christine Boton
