MANILA, Philippines — Korean rapper and BIGBANG member G-Dragon has been appointed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be an honorary ambassador for its upcoming 48th session.
The Korea Heritage Service shared the news ahead of Busan hosting the World Heritage Committee session, the first time it will be convened in Korea since the country joined the World Heritage Convention in 1988.
"G-Dragon is an artist who has exerted global influence across the arts and culture that goes beyond K-pop," said the agency, noting the artist's establishment of the JUSPEACE Foundation which addresses social issues through the arts and promote public-interest culture.
The foundation will collaboorate with UNESCO to launch a "Heritage in Peace" campaign where G-Dragon — whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong — will take part in promotional videos and attend events in person.

All donations raised by the campaign will go to the UNESCO World Heritage Fund for the protection of World Heritage sites threatened by war, climate change, and natural disasters.
The rapper, in a statement, acknowledged what an honor his appointment was: "As World Heritage sites are a shared asset that all of humanity must protect together, I want to convey a message of peace that resonates with many people and inspires them to take action."
G-Dragon took on a similar role last year for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit which was held in nearby Gyeongju.
The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee will run in Busan from July 19 to 29, 2026.
