Gilas Youth fires 31 unanswered points in a lopsided first quarter against hapless Thailand, cruising to a commanding start in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA qualifiers
MANILA, Philippines – The Gilas Pilipinas Youth U16 team got off to a 2-0 start in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers after an 87-42 thrashing of Thailand at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in Pampanga on Sunday, May 25.
Fresh from a 51-point opening-day rout of Vietnam on Saturday, May 24, the LA Tenorio-coached Gilas Youth wasted no time dismantling Thailand as it jumped out to a whopping 31-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Gilas Youth’s stifling defense forced Thailand to miss all its 19 attempts from the field in the opening period, with the Thais single point coming from the free throw line with only 9 seconds left in the quarter after a 31-0 start by the hosts.
Thailand managed to outscore Gilas Youth in the second frame, 19-16, but the 31-point separation the Philippines created early on was simply too much for the Thais to overcome as the Filipinos protected their huge double-digit advantage until the final buzzer.
For the second game in a row, all 12 players put in by Tenorio cracked the scoring column, with Carl Delos Reyes showing the way for Gilas Youth this time with 16 points, along with his 9 rebounds.
Coming off a 16-point performance against Vietnam, Delos Reyes’ fellow big man Prince Cariño continued his stellar play for the Philippines as he racked up 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Everaigne Cruz shot an efficient 5-of-7 field goal clip to finish with 12 points, while Andwele Cabañero poured in 10 markers for Gilas Youth.
On the other side, no Thailand player reached double figures in scoring as Ananda Jaeger paced the team with 8 points on 2-of-10 shooting.
Gilas Youth goes for another blowout when it takes on a winless Singapore side on Monday, May 25 at 7 pm.
