MANILA, Philippines — Sporting goods retailer Decathlon Philippines Inc., which opened a new store in Caloocan on Friday, is planning to set up eight more outlets this year to serve Filipinos that are increasingly choosing to have an active lifestyle for good health.

Decathlon Philippines retail leader Julius Tan told reporters that the newly opened store located in SM City Grand Central is the second of 10 new stores targeted for this year.

Earlier this year, Decathlon opened a new store in Cebu.

Decathlon is expanding in the country as more Filipinos are becoming conscious about their health, and choosing to pick up a sport.

“We’re just taking that opportunity that people are very conscious about health. It’s a very good moment for us to reach out to more people. That’s why we’re more aggressive in opening stores,” Tan said.

By bringing its products closer to the consumers, he said that Decathlon also wants to encourage more people to get into sports.

The new Decathlon store in Caloocan follows the Connect format, which is smaller than the regular Decathlon store.

Tan said the upcoming stores this year will feature larger floor areas of 500 to 800 square meters, with some even reaching 1,500 sqm and above.

He said that the next store opening is expected to take place in April or May in Ayala Malls Manila Bay.

Founded in 1976 in France, Decathlon offers affordable sportswear, shoes and gear for over 60 sports.

The retailer is able to offer products without the premium price by being actively involved in design, development, production and distribution.

In the Philippines, Decathlon opened its first store in 2017.

At present, Decathlon has 19 stores in the country.
