Google announces digital credentials support for Android

Google is introducing support for digital credentials on Android devices, making it easier to store and manage documents like IDs, licenses, and certificates.

This feature is built into Android’s Credential Manager and supports OpenID4VP and OpenID4VCI standards.

With this feature, users can store digital credentials within any app that supports the DigitalCredential API. These credentials can be shared across compatible apps, allowing users to present them when needed.

Transfers will be secured with encrypted communication to ensure privacy and security.

Digital credentials can include documents like driver’s licenses, passports, or education certificates, but could also cover things like insurance policies, memberships, and more as the technology expands.

Currently, the said feature is accessible through Google Wallet, with Samsung Wallet and 1Password also adding support in the near future.

However, with the lack of Google Wallet availability in certain countries like the Philippines, users may not be able to fully benefit from the new digital credential functionality.

This limitation is expected to change as Google expands Wallet’s availability, but for now, Android users in these countries may need to rely on other methods for storing and managing their digital credentials.
