MANILA, Philippines — Ride-hailing giant Grab Philippines has prepared several measures, including free transfers from the airport, to minimize wait times for passengers and mitigate traffic buildup on the road.
In an advisory, Grab said that traffic conditions during the holiday season extend trip completion by up to 25 percent on peak hours.
Further, Grab said demand for ride-hailing services is expected to go up by as high as 36 percent in the fourth quarter, as Filipinos go out more often to attend their holiday festivities.
As a result, Grab Philippines managing director Ronald Roda said the transport network vehicle service (TNVS) supply would be tighter this December.
Roda asked passengers to anticipate longer times booking a ride and completing a trip given the situation.
To lessen traffic pressures, Grab is providing free transfers from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to One Ayala on three consecutive weekends. The shuttle runs on Dec. 5 to 8, 12 to 16 and 19 to 22, ferrying passengers from NAIA Terminal 3 to One Ayala.
Grab said this effort to move passengers in groups would decrease the number of TNVS units in airport bays, where traffic usually builds up as cars wait for their passengers.
Moreover, Grab is banking on its group ride services that allow up to three passengers to share a trip to minimize the number of separate bookings for similar routes.
Recently, Grab has also started rolling out a new transport solution in Metro Manila called Sabay Sakay, which emulates the point-to-point (P2P) system of premium buses and shuttle vans.
The solution, co-developed with the Department of Transportation, introduces a carpool solution in some of the busiest corridors in the metro. The Sabay Sakay operates like a premium bus that moves passengers on a P2P basis, initially in the Pasig-Makati and Pasig-Taguig routes.
In the food delivery segment, Grab introduced a party platter feature that gives incentives to bulk orders, which would then be distributed across several riders.
Roda said this would speed up the delivery of bulk orders without overwhelming a single courier.
Roda hopes these transport solutions would help Grab minimize its traffic impact on the road in a period when Filipinos usually struggle to reach their destinations and return home.
“This holiday season will be a challenge, but we promise to do our best to be better than last year (and) we have been preparing since the start of the year to ensure our services remain accessible for every Filipino,” Roda said.
