MANILA, Philippines — Despite recording an increase in flu cases, the admission of patients in private hospitals has been on a decline, according to the Private Hospital Association of the Philippines Inc.

PHAPI president Dr. Jose Rene de Grano said hospital admissions are slowly going down due to the holiday season.

“This is because most patients do not want to be confined during the (Christmas) season. That is expected by most hospitals,” De Grano said.

He noted, though, that PHAPI has recorded a 10-percent increase in patients with flu-like illness, including adults and children, for the last quarter of the year.

“There is a slight increase in flu cases but since (flu) is self-limiting, it is not translated into admissions,” De Grano said.

He added that people only engage in outpatient consultations and are given the usual cough and cold remedies, except for the vulnerable population such as infants and those with comorbidities who need hospital confinement.

The Department of Health has been reminding the public that maintaining good hygiene practices is essential in limiting the spread of communicable diseases like the influenza-like illness.

The ILI is a group of illnesses with symptoms that include fever, cough, sore throat, colds, body aches and headaches.
