MANILA, Philippines — With travelers rushing home for the New Year celebration, the Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday reminded motorists and commuters to follow road regulations to ensure safety.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said that proper adherence to traffic rules is crucial in preventing road crashes during the holiday rush.
“We are coordinating with concerned government agencies for road safety interventions as we monitored an increase of road crashes in the past few days,” Nartatez said in a statement.
He said motorists should also check their vehicles for roadworthiness.
Nartatez cited two incidents involving a bus crash along the Marilaque Highway in Infanta, Quezon, which killed one and injured 28 others on Monday, and a similar incident in Camarines Sur that left five people dead.
He said the police would not tolerate drunk-driving, speeding and other traffic violations that compromise the safety of road users.
