MANILA, Philippines — Aboitiz Power Corp. ended the first half with earnings surging to P18.4 billion, driven by higher electricity prices and additional capacity from new hydro and solar plants.
The result marked a 45-percent jump from the P12.7 billion recorded in the same period last year.
Core net income followed the same trajectory, surging by 41 percent to P18 billion from P12.8 billion a year earlier.
In the second quarter alone, AboitizPower posted a net income of P10.5 billion, up by 31 percent from P8.1 billion a year earlier and 33 percent higher than the P7.9 billion earned in the previous quarter.
The growth was attributed to higher margins in the generation segment amid elevated energy prices and the coming online of new utility-scale solar farms.
The company also gained from its acquisition of the 797-megawatt Caliraya-Botocan-Kalayaan hydroelectric complex in Laguna, which added significant capacity to its portfolio.
Higher contracted capacity and the full six-month contribution from Chromite Gas Holdings Inc. (CGHI), its joint venture with Meralco PowerGen Corp., further fueled growth during the period.
CGHI last year sealed a $3.3-billion power venture with San Miguel Global Power to launch the country’s first and largest integrated liquefied natural gas facility.
From January to June, AboitizPower delivered higher energy sales across its core businesses.
For the generation and retail electricity business, energy sales heated up by 17 percent to 22,764 gigawatt-hours from 19,440 GWh.
The distribution business, meanwhile, saw power sales inch up by six percent year-on-year to 3,606 GWh from 3,386 GWh.
Latest Energy Regulatory Commission data showed that AboitizPower retained its lead in the power generation sector, accounting for 23.86 percent of the national market.
Its dominance was evident across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, where it recorded the highest market shares at 27.53 percent, 16.99 percent and 14.85 percent, respectively.
