MANILA, Philippines —The Philippines is among the first markets to benefit from HitPay’s rollout of its new borderless quick response (QR) system, a move expected to help local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) tap the region’s fast-growing cross-border tourism and retail spending.
HitPay, a payment platform for small and medium enterprises, said it is launching borderless QR to allow merchants to accept payments from foreign visitors using their home-country digital wallets, while still receiving settlement in local currency.
The company said the solution is aimed at its network of more than 20,000 merchants across Southeast Asia, including the Philippines.
The launch comes as HitPay recorded double year-on-year transaction growth and delivered more than $10 million in savings to merchants, driven by a 124-fold increase in non-card payment volume since 2020.
In the region, MSMEs account for 97 percent of all businesses, but many retail, food and beverage merchants continue to face difficulties in accepting a wide range of international wallets because of differing technical standards.
HitPay said Borderless QR is designed to simplify this by allowing merchants to generate transaction-specific payments for foreign visitors “as easily as local ones.”
Within the HitPay app, a merchant enters the sale amount and selects the visitor’s home country to generate a dynamic QR code. Customers can then pay instantly using their preferred wallet at mid-market rates with no additional fees, while merchants receive next-day settlement in their local currency.
Merchants using the system can accept payments from regional schemes such as QRPh in the Philippines, PayNow in Singapore, QRIS in Indonesia, PromptPay in Thailand and VietQR in Vietnam, as well as international standards including WeChat Pay of China and India’s UPI.
“As Southeast Asia advances its collective digital payment goals, our focus is on making those connectivity practical for small businesses,” said Aditya Haripurkar, co-founder and CEO of HitPay.
“Borderless QR is about supporting the region’s spirit of collaboration by providing a streamlined checkout flow. Merchants can simply select a customer’s home country to generate a specific QR with a real-time converted amount, ensuring visitors pay with the wallets they trust while merchants continue to settle in their own currency.”
For travelers, the system shows the exact cost in their home currency at the point of sale with no additional fees, helping them avoid foreign exchange surprises. For merchants, settlement in local currency as soon as the next day removes exposure to exchange rate volatility at the storefront, HitPay said.
The initial rollout is focused on Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, although the company said the system is designed for rapid scaling in other markets where it operates. Unlike traditional integrations that require significant infrastructure changes, HitPay said merchants can activate international payment standards through a simple software update.
