MANILA, Philippines — From Dilaw to his latest release Bughaw, Maki has an obvious fascination with colors, blending them into his music. This will be in full display in his album, titled “Kolorcoaster,” which is coming soon.

“Maybe it’s because of my adoration for the arts in general,” explained the young artist of his color-themed singles during the launch event of the official music video for Bughaw. “Visual arts is my first love. At that time when I first wrote Dilaw, that was the first time I told myself like, ‘OK na ko… Sad boy.’

“But this time, I asked, can I really make a love song? I don’t have a crush. Wala naman akong kahit na ano, but the song Dilaw naturally spoke to me. And I just saw myself writing.”

Maki was also surprised by how the track turned out and eventually became a hit. “It also speaks a lot about the experiences I was going through at that time. I said to myself, I will write a song about self-healing — about how I saw a world where the colors were fading, and how one color can also change everything in the blink of an eye… I was very happy with that thought.”

Maki announced at the launch event that he will be dropping his first ever full-length record, called “Kolorcoaster,” which will include Dilaw, Namumula and Bughaw.

“It’s gonna be a crazy ride, but I hope you can ride with us on this ‘Kolorcoaster.’ It’s gonna be an album that I never expected I could even make. But it took a lot of work, effort and of course, time. I hope abangan niyo ang mga susunod pang kulay in the upcoming album.”

If Dilaw is about self-love, and Namumula about unrequited love and red flags, his newest offering, Bughaw, is about friendship and a love that lasts forever.

When asked to rank and describe each track, Maki shared that Dilaw was the easiest song he had ever written, while Namumula was the most fun he had making.

“Bughaw is the most complex,” he added. “It’s a song that has a certain audience. It’s not for the masses, and I know that… This is the most mature song that I’ve ever done. It talks about longevity — a love that lasts forever.

“We may grow old, but the love that you share with your friends, or even platonic love, or like, you know this person is your blue — because he, she, or it is still here.”

HORI7ON’s Kyler, Zeke Abella and former YGIG member Alexei Claire were featured in the Bughaw music video.

On what makes him feel blue and how he manages it, Maki told The STAR: “No matter how happy we can be or get, there will always be a day where you feel sad for no reason. You’re just gonna... Maglalagay ka ng kumot sa sarili mo before you sleep, and you’re surprised because you’re crying.”

Maki experiences those moments, just like everyone else. “I have those moments when I suddenly cry and feel sad.”

“I think (during) those moments, I don’t push away my fears or emotions. I let feelings be feelings because you have to feel your feelings. These emotions are meant to be felt,” mused Maki.

“So whenever I feel sad, I need to do something for myself. I’m not gonna sit there and lie down all day, all night, every day. We have to do something — and I always do something.”

During those times, Maki calls his friends and talks to them. “And for sure, they’re just waiting for you. They’re just waiting for your call or text because they also miss you, but they don’t want to disturb your busy schedule — baka mamaya mga ganun eh. But I always tell my friends. And I always hug my cat whenever it happens.”

Maki also created a playlist on Spotify, called “Blue Hour,” which he listens to whenever he feels down. “I made this playlist because it gives me solace. It gives me the right amount of tears whenever I listen to it.”

Meanwhile, the color of Maki’s relationship status is white. “It’s a new canvas where we could paint again. I don’t have a love life right now,” he explained.
