MANILA, Philippines — Amid renewed calls in Congress for her ouster through impeachment, Vice President Sara Duterte said some lawmakers might file another case against her as a bargaining chip for budget allocations.
“The latest pronouncement by some members of the House of Representatives on a new impeachment complaint is not surprising. Its timing reveals a pattern that has become all too familiar,” Duterte said in a statement.
The year-long ban on the filing of an impeachment case against her expires in February next year.
“This constitutional mechanism is being dangled once again as a bargaining chip right before the 2026 national budget is passed,” she added.
“To those who continue to exploit the impeachment process, stop hiding behind the language of ‘good governance,’” she said.
She recalled that Sen. Francis Escudero, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco and other House members revealed in February 2024 that signatures were allegedly gathered in support of her impeachment in exchange for budget allocations. — Delon Porcalla
