MANILA, Philippines — In celebration of the 128th Independence Day, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) will release today commemorative stamps featuring revolutionary leaders Gregoria de Jesus and Emilio Jacinto.
De Jesus and Jacinto both displayed patriotism at a young age.
The commemorative stamps of De Jesus and Jacinto will be launched at the activity area of Robinsons Place Manila, PHLPost Postmaster General Maximo Sta. Maria III said.
The stamps will be sold at P16 each.
Sta. Maria said they hope that the young generation would be inspired by the stories of De Jesus and Jacinto and be of service to the country.
“At a time when many young people are searching for inspiration and role models, it is important that we introduce them to people who helped shape our country,” Sta. Maria said. “Through these stamps, we are hoping that more Filipinos would learn from their life stories and give importance to their heroism.”
De Jesus, known as the “Muse of the Katipunan,” served as the secretary section and custodian of the documents and seal of the Katipunan.
At the age of 18, she married Andres Bonifacio who became the “Father of the Philippine Revolution.”
When Bonifacio died, she married Julio Nakpil who was a commander of the Katipunan forces.
Jacinto joined the Katipunan when he was 19 and became the group’s advisor on fiscal matters and secretary to Bonifacio.
PHLPost said stamps serve as miniature pieces of history.
The Independence Day commemorative stamps were designed by in-house layout artist Jose Antonio Jayme.
