Eight-year-old Arman Hernandez Jr. dominates the elementary boys' division of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa artistic gymnastics competition
ILOCOS NORTE, Philippines – Picking gymnastics as a sport has proven worthwhile for National Capital Region standout Arman Hernandez Jr.
Hernandez dominated the elementary boys’ division of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa artistic gymnastics competition as he snagged five gold medals on top of one bronze on Monday, May 26.
The eight-year-old student-athlete of the Don Carlos Village Elementary School in Pasay topped the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and horizontal bar in Cluster 1 and helped NCR capture the team all-around crown.
He also bagged bronze in mushroom.
“My mom made me choose between dancesport or gymnastics. They were expecting that I would choose dancesport, but I chose gymnastics,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez said he grew fond of the sport after seeing videos of gymnast brothers Carlos and Eldrew Yulo on social media.
Carlos, of course, has already cemented his legacy as a Filipino sports great after becoming the Philippines’ first double Olympic champion when he ruled the floor exercise and vault in the Paris Games last year.
Meanwhile, 16-year-old Eldrew has shown tremendous promise with a number of international accolades under his belt.
“[I want] to be an Olympic champion,” said Hernandez.
Hernandez said his favorite event is floor exercise because he is happy when he is tumbling.
While Hernandez enjoys gymnastics, he said he also wants to pursue dance. – Rappler.com
