MANILA, Philippines — Actress Julia Stiles referenced another one of her movies during her "Dancing with the Stars" (DWTS) stint, this time 1999's "10 Things I Hate About You."
The teen romantic-comedy is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" which stars Stiles as high school senior Kat Stratford and the late Heath Ledger as "bad boy" Patrick Verona.
Week 6 of "DWTS" Season 35 bore the theme "Dedication Night" where contestants were asked to perform an unlearned dance to honor someone or something influential in their lives.
Stiles opted to honor Ledger, who passed away in 2008 at age 28, by dancing to Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" which his Verona sings and dances to midway through "10 Things I Hate About You" in one of the film's most iconic scenes.
The actress and her dance partner Ezra Sosa performed last with their contemporary routine, incorporating some of Ledger's moves from the movie.
The performance ended with Sosa handing a rose to an emotional Stiles, who then faced the screen as a still from the film appeared over her Stratford's famous poem toward the film's end.
After Stiles placed the rose on steps facing the screen, she was joined by "10 Things I Hate About You" co-stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union, Larisa Oleynik, Andrew Keegan, and Susan May Pratt in paying tribute to Ledger.
Stiles and Sosa received four 9s from the judges though no eliminations were observed for Week 6. Scores will be carried over to Week 7 which is themed "Horror Movie Night," a double elimination night with Halloween approaching.
During Week 5, "Super Bowl Night," Stiles' jazz routine referenced her 2001 movie "Save the Last Dance" and the performance featured a cameo from co-star Sean Patrick Thomas. — Video from Dancing with the Stars' YouTube channel
