For a TNT side that has dealt with injury woes, Glenn Khobuntin has been a picture of durability as he is set to break the record for most games played in a single season
MANILA, Philippines – Glenn Khobuntin is set to make PBA history as the player who has played the most games in a single season.
Khobuntin will see action in his 75th game of the 2024-25 campaign for TNT which will try to drag San Miguel to a winner-take-all clash in the PBA Philippine Cup finals when they tangle in Game 6 at the PhilSports Arena on Friday, July 25.
He is currently tied for the record of 74 games with five other players, according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon.
Ato Agustin was the first to achieve the feat during his MVP year with San Miguel in 1992 followed by Jojo Lastimosa and Johnny Abarrientos in 1995 with Alaska then Danny Ildefonso and Mike Mustre with San Miguel in 1998.
“I’m not thinking about those things, but of course, I’m thankful because that means I’m able to avoid injuries,” said Khobuntin in Filipino.
Khobuntin gets the chance to set the record after the Tropang 5G, seeking to become the fifth PBA team to complete a rare Grand Slam, stayed alive in the best-of-seven series with an 86-78 win in Game 5 on Wednesday, July 23.
For a team that has dealt with personnel woes all season long with several of its key players hobbled by injuries, Khobuntin has been a picture of durability.
The former NU Bulldogs standout has never missed a game this season despite playing long minutes at times and being tasked to guard opposing teams’ best players, or imports in the first two conferences.
In this conference, Khobuntin is averaging 7.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in nearly 26 minutes of play.
Khobuntin said it is all about keeping his body in shape.
“I’m consistent with my workout. That is my only secret because as a player, you need to be consistent,” said Khobuntin. “You cannot just skip a workout, especially since the game is physical, so you need to have your muscles ready.”
Khobuntin has his finger crossed that his historic night will also be a triumphant one.
“I hope we get it on Friday,” he said. – Rappler.com
